I went to UC San Diego for undergrad in general biology and then moved to Boston where I worked in a Radiation Oncology lab at Mass General Hospital for 2 years as a research technician. I am very pleased to be at Duke and specifically the UPGG which I joined in 2005. The program and faculty are supportive and foster a collaborative environment. This is of particular importance as my interests lie at the intersection of molecular biology and computational biology. In the Keene lab we study post-transcriptional gene regulation and specifically RNA-binding proteins (RBPs), which exert profound effects on the regulation of gene expression. HuR is a RBP, which stabilizes mRNAs. The goal of my project is to analyze quantitatively HuR association with its target messages. Using this information I hope to identify small molecules effectors of HuR as well as HuR-dependent cellular modules. This requires a multi-disciplinary approach and that is one of the things I like best about the UPGG program and Duke.
Outside of lab, I enjoy playing tennis nearly all year round with the weather being so nice. Also I like to run and go hiking with my lovely wife Katie. We have really grown to like Durham and the Triangle as there is much more going on than it initially appears.
Go Bills!
