Hi. My name is Jonathan Henzel and I am a first year student in the UPGG program. While my route to graduate school was atypical, I am excited to be a part of the Duke community. I received a B.S. in Finance from West Virginia University (Let’s go…Mountaineers!) before moving out to California where I worked in real estate. After souring on finance-related work I began working in a French restaurant in La Jolla. After four years in the kitchen I decided to go back to school and received a M.S. in Biology at Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo studying meiosis in S. cerevisiae. To my surprise, working in the kitchen turned out to be great training for work in the lab.
When making my decision on where to attend graduate school, Duke was an easy choice. The UPGG program offers tremendous flexibility in choosing a research discipline amongst a wide range of research interests. The collaborative environment that Duke provides is unique and unparalleled from other schools that I was considering.
