Kyle Dexter

I received my bachelor's at the University of Virginia in May 2002 and began my Ph.D. at Duke in August of 2003. Prior to coming to Duke, I'd been involved in research with lemurs at the Duke Primate Center, hippopotami in Botswana, field mice in the southern Appalachians, and trees in the Amazon rainforest. My dissertation research focuses on tropical tree communities in southeastern Peru. I use genetic methods to circumscribe species, study the phylogenetic relationships of species, and analyze gene flow within species. Outside of my dissertation research, I am studying tree communities in Panama, the evolutionary history of the Amazon, and the island biogeography of Lesser Antillean birds. Duke has proved a fantastic setting to pursue this multi-disciplinary and collaborative research.
