Heidi Cederholm

While earning a BS degree through an interdisciplinary science program at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, WA, I began my career in research elucidating mechanisms of anterior-posterior axis formation in D. melanogaster. Upon graduation, I accepted an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education fellowship to identify potential biological health threats through vector-borne disease surveillance. After 18 months as a fellow I was hired as a DOD Research Medical Technologist in the Department of Clinical Investigation, Madigan Army Medical Center, where my mission was to provide technical support to medical residents and post-doctoral researchers. Working with clinicians in general surgery, maternal-fetal medicine, urology, and pathology, as well as PhD molecular biologists, allowed me the opportunity to address a diverse range of basic and translational research questions.

I entered the Duke University graduate school through an interdisciplinary program in Cell and Molecular Biology (CMB) in the fall of 2007 and have affiliated with UPGG for my degree. For my thesis, I work to understand the transcriptional programs underlying root morphogenesis using the model system Arabidopsis thaliana and the crop plant Oryza sativa. I have enjoyed the opportunities for collaboration and cross-discipline exchange as a member of CMB, UPGG, and the Center for Systems Biology in the Duke Institute for Genome Science and Policy.

In addition to science, I enjoy visiting the gorgeous NC beaches and dining out all around the Research Triangle!
