I came to Duke after having grown up in the San Francisco-Bay Area. The transition was easy and I really enjoy Durham and finally being able to experience all the seasons. Being a lover of the outdoors, there is plenty of hiking, kayaking, cycling, etc. in the immediate area. The cost of living is especially reasonable and graduate students can easily live quite nicely on the stipend. I am a member of Bruce Sullenger’s lab and am studying methods by which to reprogram mutant p53 transcripts of cancerous cells in order to make them more susceptible to chemotherapeutics. I have experienced many opportunities to work with first-class researchers and have taken advantage of the multi-disciplinary approach the Duke University Medical Center fosters.
