Amy Akers

Hey, I’m Amy. Originally from New York, I grew up in a small town outside of Albany. I attended college at Cornell University where I received my degree in biological sciences with a concentration in Genetics & Development. Following graduation I moved to Durham and joined the UPGG program in 2004.
As a fourth year student I have focused my graduate work on human genetics. In particular, I am interested in the molecular mechanisms of inherited disease. For my thesis research, I am working in Doug Marchuk’s lab, where we inherited vascular disorders. My project is to further characterize the underlying mechanisms which give rise to cerebral cavernous malformations. Duke is a great place with great science and the UPGG program offers students an opportunity to work with faculty from a wide range of disciplines.
