| For
2003, members
of the University
Program in Genetics have
created a lecturer series
in which we invite distinguished
scientists to speak on
topics of broad interest
to the Duke scientific
community. We are
excited to establish this
series
as an annual event for the
UPG program. The
series is unique in that
it
is centered around the students
of the UPG. Along with UPG
co-director Doug Marchuk
serving
as advisor, a student committee
organizes and runs the series
in its entirety-from the
scope
of the lecture series following
through to planning specific
events during the speaker’s
visit. In addition
to the student committee
members, all UPG students
have the opportunity
to meet with the speakers
throughout the year
at a reception following
each lecture, as well
as during lunch and dinners
held specifically
for the students. For
our inaugural UPG
Distinguished Lecturer
Series, our speakers
include Drs. Mario
Capecchi, Richard
Axel, Douglas Wallace
and Eric Lander speaking
on diverse topics
from gene targeting
to mitochondrial
genes. Members
of the student committee
for 2002-2003 are
Monique Kierlin,
Rachel Lovingood,
Dagan Loisel, Evadnie
Rampersaud, Jon Zawistowski,
Jack McNulty, Candice
Brown and Becky Mosher. Current
and future UPG
students interested
in being a member
of the Distinguished
Lecturer Series
student committee
can contact
one of the current
student members
or faculty advisor
Doug Marchuk. |
